Ballistic results pending for pistol found at dam

The Benoni SAPS spokesperson said the firearm has gone for an Integrated Ballistic Identification System test.

The ballistic results for the 9mm pistol discovered at CR Swart Dam on January 12 is still pending.

The firearm was retrieved by a young magnet fishing enthusiast Euuan (9), who stumbled upon the weapon while engaging in his hobby, which involves using a strong magnet to pull metal objects from the water.

His father, Richard, who was with him when the firearm latched onto his 2kg magnet, promptly handed over the rusty pistol to the Benoni SAPS that same day. The police took custody of it for further investigation.

Young magnet fisherman Euuan points to where he pulled the 9mm pistol from the CR Swart Dam on January 12.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele stated that the firearm was sent for an Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) test to determine the serial number.

“However, due to a staggering backlog at SAPS forensic laboratories, we are still waiting for the outcome,” said Sekele.

Richard previously told the Benoni City Times that the discovery was unusual because, for the past two months, they had been fishing at that very same spot, pulling out coins, LED lights, fishing hooks, paintbrushes, rollers, anything magnetic.
