Benoni SPCA records highest January adoptions, sets goal of 60 monthly

While the SPCA is pleased with the increase, they would love to see at least 60 adoptions per month.

The Benoni SPCA has kicked off the year on a high note, recording its highest number of pet adoptions for the month of January.

The organisation, dedicated to the welfare and protection of animals, reported 35 successful adoptions, a significant increase following slow adoption rates in previous months.

According to vice chairperson Monique Quenet, the surge in adoptions signals growing community support for rescued animals, with more people opting to adopt rather than shop.

“We have also had a number of groups coming to volunteer, which I believe has given the society more exposure. Additionally, our Facebook posts also help create awareness. However, we have so many animals that don’t make it onto our Facebook page, and they too deserve loving homes,” said Quenet.

She added that while the SPCA is pleased with the increase, they would love to see at least 60 adoptions per month.

“We urge the public to come and browse through our kennels, you might just find your future best friend. Every animal that you adopt and offer a forever home to is saved,” she said.

Quenet also emphasised the importance of adopting adult dogs and not just small ones.

“All the adult dogs in our care have faced either abandonment, neglect, or the heartbreak of losing their previous families for various reasons. “They are not bad dogs. They are not second-hand dogs. They have been let down by humans.

“No matter the road that led them to us, they find themselves confused, alone, and longing for companionship.

“By welcoming one into your home, you offer more than just shelter, you provide comfort, security, and a renewed sense of trust in humans. In return, you gain a loyal friend who is often already trained, grateful, and eager to shower you with unconditional love,” said Quenet.

She added that adopting an adult dog not only transforms the animal’s life but also frees up space in the shelter, allowing another animal to receive care and find a forever home.

How to adopt an animal
Visit the SPCA’s adoption kennels: Once you’ve found an animal you’d like to adopt, take note of the kennel number and proceed to the office.

Complete the adoption application: A non-refundable R100 deposit is required, along with a copy of your ID or driver’s licence, proof of address, and (if you live in a complex) a letter from your landlord or body corporate granting permission to own an animal.

A compatibility test will be conducted to ensure a good match, and proof of sterilisation is required for any existing pets in your home.

The SPCA will conduct a home check: Once approved, the SPCA will contact you to finalise the paperwork and payment.

Your new pet will receive veterinary care: The animal will be vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and sterilised before being ready to go home with you.
