Mom, son rescued from kidnappers
It was initially reported that a mother and her child had been kidnapped.
Thanks to the quick reaction of alert members of the Northmead community, four armed suspects were arrested in Voortrekker Street after taking a woman and her son against their will.
According to Stephan Lombard, spokesperson for the Benoni CPF, members received a call from concerned community members, claiming that they had witnessed the victims being forced into a silver Toyota Etios, in Third Street, on May 9.
“The call came through at 18:15 with witnesses fearing that the pair had been kidnapped,” he said.
“CPF members with the support of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), SuperCops and No Jack Vehicle Tracking, made their way to the CBD in the direction of the fleeing vehicle.”
The victims were found unharmed at the Voortrekker Street Taxi Rank and BFS members were able to bring the assailants to a stop, further up the road.
“It was revealed that the purpose of the crime was robbery,” said Lombard.
“Their personal belongings were found in the suspects’ possession, as well as two firearms.”
The men were handed over to the Benoni Police Station and were set to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.
Lombard thanked the community for their swift response, which led to the quick and safe return of the mother and her child.
“Without valuable information like this, the suspects would still be out prowling the streets and looking for their next victim,” he said.
