Botha dominates race at league meeting

She won the U12 girls' 3km in 11:43.

Kayla Botha led from start to finish to win a thrilling U12 girls’ 3km race at the fourth Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) cross-country league meeting at Marivate Park in Daveyton on June 28.

The race showcased the youngster’s consistency and continued improvement, as she led from the start and never relinquished her lead. Setting a blistering pace, she left her competitors behind and crossed the line first in 11:43.

“I went out fast, but not so fast that I drained my energy. I also took the corners quickly to save time. It was easier after the first kilometre, but I had to push myself at the end,” she said.

Much of the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) junior runner’s consistency is due to her hard work. She now has her sights set on a stronger performance at the ASA Cross Country Championships in Middelburg in September.

“I’ve improved a lot. It’s also because of the hard work I’ve put in. We’re going to a training camp this week in Dullstroom, and I hope it will help me get faster. I’m going to keep improving so I can do better at the national champs.”
