Two children die in shack fire

Police have opened an inquest docket, and investigations are ongoing.

Two young children, aged four and nine,died in a shack fire in Putfontein recently.

According to Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Raider Ubisi, the incident occurred at around 22:00 while the children’s mother had briefly gone to her sister’s nearby home. During this time, four children were inside the shack.

“When the mother returned, she found the shack engulfed in flames.

“The two older children, aged 12 and 13, managed to escape the blaze and were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. Sadly, the four-year-old and nine-year-old were declared dead on the scene,” said Ubisi.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.

Police have opened an inquest docket, and investigations are ongoing.

Residents are urged to take extra precautions by not leaving heating devices unattended and always ensure children are supervised when such appliances are in use.
