Cupcake drive needs help

Yummy Bean Cafe has called on bakers to support their monthly cupcake fundraiser for cancer awareness, with the first event raising funds for bone marrow cancer.

The World of Wellness (WOW) gym and the Yummy Bean Cafè in Rynfield call on local bakers to help with donations of cupcakes for their monthly Cupcakes of Hope cancer awareness initiative.

“The initiative will run until November. Every month, we’ll sell cupcakes donated by local bakers. All proceeds go to Cupcakes of Hope Foundation for Cancer,” said Sandor Dowling.

The first event, on July 9, focused on bone marrow cancers.

“Our first drive was a great success. We sold 75 cupcakes, all donated by Tessa Benade from The Culinary Loft, based at the WOW.”

Tessa said she didn’t think twice when Sandor and her partner, Joanne Fenn, approached her to help with this month’s drive.

“It’s more than just a foundation. If you check what they’ve done for families and children with cancer, it’s amazing. They are real walking angels who take away the financial burden cancer unfortunately brings.”

The chef added that she got involved with the drive because she’s also been affected by cancer.

“What Sandor and Joanne are doing is phenomenal. They bring awareness to how cancer affects us all. They aren’t doing just one event but a couple because there are different forms of cancer.”

On August 9, the drive will focus on female cancers, and a baker has pledged around 24 cakes, but they are hoping for more. On September 9, the focus will be on children with cancer, and on October 9 and November 9, they will focus on breast and male-related cancers, respectively.

“We are continuing with this wonderful initiative. We are calling on bakers or anyone who wants to donate cupcakes to assist us with donations for our events for the rest of the year,” added Sandor.

Other initiatives the partners are spearheading are their monthly Arti Parti Paint Nights. The proceeds from the August 13 event will go to the Benoni SPCA.

“The main portion of the proceeds will be donated to the SPCA in the form of a monetary donation from ticket sales after paints and other essentials. We would also appreciate donations of pet food, blankets and accessories.”

Business and individuals are urged to support the initiative.
