SAPS beef up patrols

Three cases of house robbery are under investigation.

After an increase in reported cases of house robbery, Captain Nomsa Sekele, the spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, is appealing to the community to remain vigilant.

“We have noted with concern an alarming increase in house robberies in our policing precinct,” she said.

“Information indicates that the suspects are armed and, therefore, considered dangerous. Investigations are underway to establish whether the cases are linked.”

Incident report:
• A security guard at St Vincent, a housing complex on Uys Street, Rynfield, was held at gunpoint by three men at 02:35 on August 5.

It is alleged that another three people were seen exiting the complex, pushing a motorcycle.

• A 76-year-old woman was held at gunpoint in her home on Umtata Street, Norton Home Estate, during the early hours of August 5.

According to the victim’s statement, a lone armed criminal gained entry into the home through an open kitchen window. Investigations further revealed that the burglar-proofing outside the window was compromised.

The suspect, who wore a balaclava, demanded cash and jewellery from the victim.

He fled with her cellphone and Sassa card.

• A domestic worker was held at gunpoint on August 6 at her employer’s home on Martin Street, Northmead.

It is alleged that the victim was hanging washing when three armed men entered the property and locked her inside the main bedroom while they ransacked the home.

They stole three TVs, liquor and shoes.

A white Toyota Rumion was seen fleeing the scene.

“Patrols throughout the affected areas have been beefed up and Gauteng Crime Wardens deployed to do visible policing operations,” said Sekele.

“We are appealing to the community to take all the necessary steps to safeguard their homes, thus ensuring their safety.”

Sekele added that it was paramount for homeowners to inform their employees of these incidents to create greater awareness.

“Most importantly, report any suspicious persons to your private security company, the CPF or a police station,” she said.

“No arrests in any of these cases have yet been made.”
