Women urged to give the gift of life this Women’s Month

Visit the donor centre at 42 Fourteenth Avenue, Northmead.

It’s that time of year when we turn our focus to the women who give freely to support and care for others.

Women’s Month is a moment to reflect on your personal journey, to celebrate the challenges you’ve overcome, and to seek mentorship from those who have boldly stood against oppression.

Making a difference comes in many forms – it can be a feather-light embrace or a thunderous roar. This Women’s Month, the Northmead SANBS Donor Centre is encouraging women to make a difference simply by rolling up their sleeves.

“Women need to support women,” said Crystal Park resident and regular blood donor Mmapula Tlhako.

“Our actions do not always have to be big public affairs. By donating blood, you are committing to save the life of another. In my books, that’s a pretty big deal.”

Phlebotomist Linda Makapela said access to safe blood can save the life of a mother during childbirth or give a beloved child a chance at survival.

“We have a weekly target of collecting 60 units of whole blood,” she said.

“As women, let’s unite to ensure SANBS has enough reserves. You are not only committing to saving a life, you are giving a loved one a second chance to make cherished memories.”

Tips for female blood donors:
• To maintain optimal iron levels, include iron-rich foods in your diet such as protein-rich products, dark leafy greens, seeds, nuts, legumes and beans, as well as tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and green peppers.

• Menstrual cycles and menopause may decrease iron levels, so consider using high-quality supplements.

• Avoid caffeinated beverages like tea, coffee and energy drinks with meals, as these can hinder iron absorption. Instead, opt for fresh fruit juice or water.

Eligible donors must weigh over 50kg, be between 16 and 75 years of age, and lead a healthy lifestyle. Women undergoing fertility treatment, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding, are not eligible to donate.

The Northmead SANBS Donor Centre is open from 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays.
