Irun’s Megan elated after grabbing a silver medal at champs

She also qualified for the ASA cross-country championships in Middelburg, next month.

Irun Athletic Club’s Megan Roberts was over the moon after claiming a silver medal at the CGA cross-country championships at Germiston City Soccer Club on August 16.

The Brakpan resident, coached by Jared de Waal, finished second behind winner Tumishang Seroko of Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) in a fast U12 girls’ 3km.

“I’m so happy with my achievement. I’m feeling good,” she said.

Running neck and neck with the boys, Megan looked comfortable behind the second lead group after 1km. She pushed hard in the second-half to ultimately cross the line ninth overall and second in the girls’ race.

“I didn’t start very well but I managed to make ground and catch up with the leaders. I felt very happy crossing the line in second place, which helped me qualify for the national championships.”

Megan’s twin brother, Caleb, fell a place outside the top three in the U12 boys’ race. He thanked his parents, coach, and God for their unwavering support throughout the provincial season.

“I’m happy with today’s outcome. I left everything in the Lord’s hands. He’s the reason I do what I do,” said Caleb.
