ERU overpowers Northerns to march to Merlin League final

Both teams scored four tries each but ERU was clinical off the tee, scoring 12 points to Northerns' none.

East Rand United (ERU) powered into the Valke Merlin League final with a commanding 32-20 victory over hosts Benoni Northerns on August 30, combining precision kicking with disciplined play to outlast their determined rivals.

Despite both teams dotting down four tries apiece, ERU’s composure off the tee made the difference, with 12 crucial points slotted through conversions and penalties.

Northerns, meanwhile, failed to convert any of their opportunities, leaving valuable points behind in a fiercely contested showdown.

The clash featured standout performances from ERU’s backline, who exploited gaps with clinical finishing, while the forwards absorbed sustained pressure in the closing stages. The hosts fought bravely to stay within reach, but the Reiger Park outfit’s accuracy and game management ensured their spot in the final.

Thorn Khumalo opened the scoring for ERU early on after stealing the ball deep inside the Northerns half. Flyhalf Thato Pheleu converted to make it 7-0.

The hosts struck back with two touchdowns through Lex Larens and Ruan Botha, but Velile Tshabalala and fullback Chezlin Oosthuizen increased ERU’s advantage, with Pheleu accurate off the tee, as the game went into the break with the visitors leading 19-10.

Khumalo added his second try of the day and his team’s fourth early in the second stanza. Northerns’ Dewet Trutter added his team’s third touchdown deep in the half, but that didn’t dent ERU’s confidence as they continued surging forward.

Pheleu continued his accuracy with the boot as he scored two penalties to take the score to 32-15. PJ van Biljon scored a late try for Northerns, but it was too late as ERU walked away with maximum points to qualify for the final.

In the second team’s game, Elsburg Eagles beat the Northerns Storm 35-26 to also book their spot in the final.
