You too can make the cut as a CPF member
“Through active citizenship the CPF keeps our neighbours safe and create an environment without fear.”
By day, Kim Morrow wields a pair of scissors with precision and applies highlights with Hollywood flair.
However, when the static of her two-way radio interrupts the sound of her hairdryer, the chairperson of Sector 1 of the Benoni Community Policing Forum (CPF) transforms into a community hero clad in a reflective jacket.
Known to her team as “the traffic cone” due to her small stature, Kim has become a well-known face throughout her sector as well as Benoni at large.
But it’s her commitment to ensuring the safety of residents which makes her a formidable driving force within the city’s highly effective CPF.
As a qualified hairdresser, Kim looked up to her brother with envy whenever he left the house in his SA Defence Force (SANDF) uniform.
“I always wanted to wear a uniform,” she said flipping her tresses over her shoulder.
“I served as an SAPS reservist for six years and have been part of the Benoni CPF for the past two and a half years.”
Kim, who lives in Brentwood Park, believes that a proactive approach can have a positive impact on the fight against crime.
“Members of the CPF are the eyes and ears of the police,” she said. “We are an extension of the law and have the benefit of having direct contact with the authorities to assist where needed.
“With the help of active patrollers, who dedicate a small portion of their time weekly, we show criminals that we are a community of unity.
“Continuous patrols and visibility interfere with criminal behaviour which in turn sends them packing, away from the annoyance of patrollers working hand-in-hand with local security companies as well as the SAPS.”
Kim explained that becoming a member of the CPF requires commitment and dedication, however, rotational patrols of a minimum of an hour to two hours per week is what keeps the wheels of justice turning.
“As members we work closely together and are able to identify each other’s strengths. This in turn puts us in a position to place members in various key roles best suited to their personalities and abilities, thus strengthening our team.
“Our focus is and always has been to send criminals a strong and clear message; we are invested in our community and through our actions strive to create a safe space for all residents.”
Benoni currently has seven active CPF sectors and are calling on residents and businesses to join its ranks.
No experience is needed and relevant training will be provided.
