Hattingh urges community to honour Comrades legend Tommy Malone
“If you love running, you will love this race."
Kai Hattingh (14) has challenged runners and walkers in the community to lace up and participate in the Tommy Malone Memorial Race at Boksburg City Stadium this October.
Hattingh won the women’s 5km at last year’s race. She will be returning to defend her title.

“I will be returning to be a part of this amazing race. I will do the 5km again. It has a super-fast route that I enjoyed running on,” she said.
The Nedbank Running Club athlete says the community event isn’t just another date on the calendar because it’s held in honour of 1966 Comrades Marathon winner Malone, making it a race you simply can’t afford to miss.
“If you love running, you will love this race. It’s definitely one to tick on your calendar.”
Malone is remembered for the dramatic 1967 ultimate human race finish, when Manie Kuhn beat him by one second after collapsing metres before the finish line, lurching forward before collapsing again, allowing Kuhn to pass and snatch the victory.
Hattingh expressed pride in being part of a race that honours one of the best long-distance runners the country has ever produced.
“It’s my second year of road running and also my second year as part of Nedbank RC. It’s a race that’s dedicated to a legend. Last year it had an amazing crowd. The support was great. I hope we have a record crowd to honour Tommy,” said Hattingh.
