Residents march in prayer over Du Randt Road

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Rider Ubisi said they were concerned about the many accidents on Du Randt Road, especially as the festive season approaches.

In a show of unity and concern, residents of the Mokgoba community took to the streets for a prayer walk on the notorious 5km stretch of Du Randt Road between the Mokgoba and Mayfield One entrances on October 10.

The walk aimed to seek divine protection and raise awareness following a spate of road accidents that have left the community concerned.

Led by local church leaders, the Putfontein SAPS and community representatives, the participants sang hymns, prayed for road safety on the sharp bends and called for urgent intervention along the dangerous route.

For Abel Cossa, who lost his younger brother to alleged illegal racing, the walk was not only a spiritual appeal but also a plea for action.

“I had worked so hard to get my brother a driving license. I was so happy when did. He was driving on this road when the accident happened,” said Cossa.

“He was driving towards Mokgoba. My uncle was slightly ahead of him when two cars driving in the opposite direction approached at high speed. They passed my uncle, but one tried to overtake, and he hit my brother.

“This walk is a good thing. Maybe it will bring the healing some of us need. I also plead with motorists to drive cautiously here.”

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Rider Ubisi said they were concerned about the many accidents on Du Randt Road, especially as the festive season approaches.

“There are many accidents on this road. Seeing that the festive season is upon us, we are praying so that we won’t have accidents on this road. Many people have died. We are asking for the Lord’s intervention,” said Ubisi.

When asked about the prevalent crimes on Du Randt Road, Ubisi said the frequently found bodies along the stretch, but their primary concern was what he described as a “bad spirit” that seems to affect young people in the community.

“Young people are committing suicide in numbers. We are asking the Lord to help our community. We also plead with those who will receive their December bonuses to spend them wisely. They must avoid drinking and driving.
