Organisation’s walk for cancer is a success
The event was held to celebrate survivors, support those undergoing treatment and honour the memories of those who have lost their battles with breast cancer.
Dressed in pink, cancer survivors, community members, and various local organisations walked for hope and life during the Eyethu Foundation’s annual breast cancer awareness fun walk in Mayfield on October 25.
As part of the Eyethu Foundation’s commitment to raising breast cancer awareness and promoting early detection within the community, the organisation held the 8km walk under the “Walk for Hope, Walk for Life” banner. It began in Putfontein and concluded at Mayfield Square Shopping Centre.

According to the organisation, the event aimed to educate, empower, and inspire, and to remind community members that early detection saves lives.
“It also served as a moment to celebrate survivors, support those undergoing treatment, and honour the memories of those who have lost their battles with breast cancer,” said founder Nilza Linda.

“Throughout the day, health advocates and volunteers shared information about the importance of regular check-ups, healthy living, and supporting one another. Survivors also shared their stories, reminding everyone that courage and hope remain stronger than fear,” Linda added.
Linda thanked stakeholders, including the Mayfield Shopping Centre manager, taxi rank, Benoni Taxi Association, and the CIP Party, for making the event a success.

“Despite limited preparation time, the event turned out to be a success, drawing an inspiring turnout of people from Daveyton and Benoni. The unity and collaboration of all partners showcased the spirit of Ubuntu and the shared commitment to fighting breast cancer.”
According to Linda, the Eyethu Foundation will continue creating breast cancer awareness through its annual walk.
“Together, we walk for those who can’t. We walk for awareness, and we walk for a cure,” she said.
