Nonyane win nail-biting race to defend title

He held-off Kungawo Madikane on the line after the Boxer runner took control of the race from the start.

Bokamoso Nonyane held his nerve to successfully defend his 1 200m title, edging a nail-biting finish by just one hundredth of a second at the CGA sub-youth track and field championships at Germiston Stadium on November 22.

The Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) athlete surged past Kungawo Madikane in the final straight, overturning the Boxer youngster’s gun to tape lead and winning a dramatic sprint on the line.

Nonyane clinched the gold in 03:46.55, with Madikane second in 03:46.56. Bokang Maboya, who won the third heat, completed the podium on the overall standings in 03:48.58.

“It was a tough race. Today was just about pushing each other like we’ve done all season. This healthy competition between myself and Kungawo gives me strength and has helped greatly with increasing my speed,” said Nonyane.

Madikane, who took control from the gun and set the tempo for most of the three-laps, echoed Nonyane’s sentiments, saying they agreed beforehand to push one another throughout the race.

“The race was good. My strategy was to push Bokamoso and for him to do the same for me. We planned it and I’m happy it worked out the way we wanted it to. I’m happy with my second place,” he said.
