Gardens residents beam with festive cheer
“Unconditional love has the power to transform an entire community.”
The “veld at the cross” in the Farrarmere Gardens was awash with festive cheer when residents gathered for the final soup kitchen for the year on December 15.
Dressed in white and red, residents turned out in droves not only to enjoy a scrumptious meal with friends, but to give thanks to the women who have opened their hearts to the community.
Fearing that the weekly soup kitchen, which was established by local do-gooder Nelia du Plessis in 2024, may cease due to financial constraints, the day’s festivities were cause for great celebration.

“Following an article in the Benoni City Times, an anonymous donor stepped in, committing a monetary donation, which will see the soup kitchen continue throughout the coming year,” said Nelia.
“Through further contributions of 100kg of boerewors, rolls, refreshments and gifts for more than 70 children, we were able to host a heart-warming Christmas party for our residents.”
Sharing warm embraces, Gardens resident and “mother” of the suburb, Yolandie Jonker-Hunt, said it is a privilege to be able to spoil her neighbours, who have endured incredible hardships.

“People thrive when you acknowledge their pain. Care and love is all that is needed to uplift and restore dignity,” she said.
“It is an honour to serve my neighbours and to bring a sprinkling of hope to their lives.”
Nelia and Yolandie took the time to thank members of Bethany Fellowship in Benoni for their invaluable support in making the day a joyous occasion.

The Bekker family, who recently became members of the Gardens community, thanked Nelia and Yolandie for welcoming them to the suburb with open arms.
“We appreciate everything you do for us and the community as a whole,” they said.
“Your love has made a huge impact on our lives.”
