The Split Happens clinched the inaugural Blaze Cup on a tense final day at the Benoni Bowling Club (BBC) in Western Extension.

The Blaze Warriors grabbed runners-up honours, while the Heat Wave Heroes finished third.

The social bowls event was launched at the start of November, with matches held every Tuesday and the final on the last Tuesday of the month.

“This unique, fun-first event is designed to draw local players and newcomers alike for the most relaxed, rewarding and inclusive take on bowls, complete with fantastic prizes sponsored by leading bowls equipment supplier, Henselite SA,” said BBC member Chantal Grotto.

Grotto explained that the competition is unique because it focuses on sociability and an unconventional format.
“It actively discourages rigid, high-pressure competitive play. Instead, the Cup often incorporates Blaze Rules – modified, humorous, and ever-changing scoring and game mechanics – to keep the atmosphere light and ensure every player, regardless of skill, has a chance to win.

“It is the perfect mid-week antidote to intense competitive pressure, prioritising laughter and community spirit on the green.”

Prize winners included Tannie Lydia, who won Henselite shoes; Hawa Hammond, who walked away with a pamper hamper; and Mornè Lennox, who grabbed the Henselite bag.

Eamonn McNally said, “The Blaze Cup is the heart and soul of our Tuesday evenings. We created it specifically to strip away the formality and just enjoy the game for what it is – a great social pastime. It’s fantastic to see new faces joining our community every week, often trying bowls for the first time, all thanks to the fun atmosphere.

“A huge thank you must go to Henselite SA for their incredibly generous support, as well as BLUU Car Rental for their donation of welcome packs. Their prizes really add to the excitement and reward our players for their participation and ‘blaze’ efforts.”
