A firearm used by the suspect was recovered at the scene.

A 31-year-old man was shot and killed during a gun battle with police in Zenzele Ext 1 on January 6.

According to Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Raider Ubisi, police officers were patrolling along Malherbe Street at around 23:50 when they encountered four men.

The officers reportedly stopped the group for a routine search, but the men fled the scene.

“Police gave chase, and while pursuing the suspects, the 31-year-old produced a firearm and fired shots at the officers,” Ubisi said.

Police returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The other three men escaped and remain at large.

Ubisi confirmed that no police officers were injured during the incident. A firearm used by the suspect was recovered at the scene.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder and are continuing investigations.
