Nel and Tandy conquer Dusi marathon

They were the first ERK paddlers at the finish.

Jonathan Nel and Richard Tandy led the East Rand Kayak (ERK) Club charge at the 75th Dusi Canoe Marathon in KZN from February 19 to 21.

Nel and Tandy were the first ERK paddlers to arrive at the finish at Blue Lagoon on February 21 after a gruelling 120km race over three days.

The duo completed the race in 09:25 to finish 22nd in the senior category. Michael Stewart was the second ERK paddler at the finish after he clocked 10:48 for seventh place in the men’s 50 to 54 category along with his partner, James Russell.

Andy Birkett became the first person to win the race 16 times when he and Matthew Fenn claimed the K2 title to surpass Graeme Pope-Ellis’ record of 15 wins.

Sbonelo Khwela and Msawenkosi Mtolo were second, while Bongani Ntinga and Sandile Mtolo completed the top three.

Christie Mackenzie and Saskia Hockly won the women’s title.
