Trio accused of setting cats alight remain in custody

The matter will return to court on March 17 as investigations continue.

Dudu Nkoyena, Cleopatra Mlambo and Moses Skosana remain in custody after their matter was postponed in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on February 24.

They briefly appeared in court in connection with the alleged assault and burning of five cats in Mgababa Section, Putfontein, in November last year. The case was postponed to March 17.

During proceedings, the trio’s legal representatives confirmed receipt of the contents of the docket, including video footage reportedly taken on the day of the incident.

The accused allegedly attacked the animals after accusing their owner, 65-year-old Nomsa Maseko, of using the cats for witchcraft.

It is further alleged that during the incident, Maseko’s shack was vandalised, leaving her homeless and destitute. She is being sheltered by a Good Samaritan who has taken her in.

Nkoyena, Mlambo and Skosana face charges of animal cruelty, malicious damage to property and trespassing.

The matter will return to court on March 17 as investigations continue.
