Cyclists urged to abide by rules of the road

As cyclists continue building up to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, they have been urged to show respect to all road users.

With less than a month to go until the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the focus turns to cycling etiquette and road safety on busy public routes.

Preparation for the event is in full swing, and more cyclists are sharing the roads, while motorists navigate larger group rides and early morning pelotons.

David Bellairs, CEO of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, encouraged cyclists to abide by the rules of the road and show respect to all road users.

“With training building toward the Cape Town Cycle Tour, now is an ideal time for cyclists to refresh the basics of safe riding.

“Warmer weather, increased road activity and longer daylight hours create excellent riding conditions, but also introduce additional risks that require awareness and preparation,” said Bellairs.

Bellairs advised cyclists to:

Stay visible

Wear bright kit, use front and rear lights even in daylight and signal clearly so motorists know what you intend to do. Traffic patterns can be unpredictable, so visibility remains essential.

Check your bike

A quick pre-ride check can prevent most problems. Ensure tyres are properly inflated, brakes respond smoothly, and your helmet fits correctly.

Ride with awareness

Keep a straight line, obey all road rules, avoid blind spots and make eye contact with drivers when crossing busy junctions. Group riders should communicate clearly and avoid bunching.

Manage heat and hydration

Temperatures rise quickly in summer conditions. Start early when possible, drink regularly and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

Protect your skin

Last year’s melanoma awareness campaign highlighted how vulnerable cyclists are to ultraviolet exposure. Apply high SPF sunscreen before every ride, reapply on long sessions, and cover exposed skin with UV protective fabrics and check your skin regularly for changes.

Choose safer routes and share your plan

Ride familiar or well-used routes and let someone know where you are going. Use tracking tools where possible.
