WATCH: ‘Yappy’ days following another successful spayathon

A single snip prevents unwanted litters preventing abandonment, abuse and neglect.

Neither cold nor rain could stop the tails from wagging as residents and their canine companions took to the streets of Northmead on March 22, for the annual The Animal Guardian’s (TAG) Spayathon, hosted by Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

With resounding barks, doggies leapt into action, splashing through puddles along the 5km route, often dragging their human companions in an effort to pick up the pace.

Welcoming participants on the wet Sunday morning, Northerns’ Bernice Piveteau said she was delighted to see so many participants braving the dreary weather in support of the of the city’s animal welfare organisations.

“The heavens thankfully closed the taps long enough to ensure that everyone could enjoy a leisurely stroll out with their fur-babies, while making a meaningful contribution to TAG’s ongoing community outreach project,” she said.

“Our club is proud of hosting such a tail-wagging fun family event.”

Tending to the fire, ensuring that participants were greeted with alluring aroma of boerie rolls, fresh off the grill at the finish line, TAG’s Annie Jungmann said that Benoni’s animal-loving community never disappoints.

“The spayathon is one of our biggest fundraising initiatives which funds sterilisation drives within our underprivileged communities,” she said.

“Through education, we are not only preventing unwanted litters but ultimately easing pressures faced by animal rescue organisations. Every sterilisation protects innocent animals from being abused, abandoned or neglected.”

Fastening his running shoes and challenging his dad to a sprint, Bongani Mkandawire (9) said every step he takes during the morning’s festivities is dedicated to those who are committed to protecting animals.

“I love running and I love my dogs. I cannot imagine my life without my pets,” he said.

“I wish every dog could have a loving home where they are safe to run and play.”

With ‘good-boy’ belly rubs and treats in abundance the event was yet another barking success.
