Crystal Park learners discover the joy of reading

“Reading forms the foundation of learning.”

Learners from Crystal Park Primary School have not only discovered the joy of reading, but are also exploring the creativity of the written and spoken word.

“The school library, which was recently renovated with the help of the 2025 Reading Champions, has officially reopened and is fostering a culture of reading beyond the curriculum,” said educator Kabelo Mokoena.

“Two learner reading groups, Sunshine and Bookworms, have been established, demonstrating the transformative power of reading.”

During Library Week (March 16 to 22), learners presented poems, expressing these in various forms, such as song, dramatisation and prescribed poetry.

“Learners also actively contribute to the school’s learner-led newspaper, The Crystal Chronicle, which features book reviews and writing from each group and is edited by the learner editorial team,” Mokoena explained.

“The newspaper encourages learners to engage with print media to develop creative and transactional writing skills.”

Additionally, the school will be launching a reading support programme for learners in grades two and three. It will focus on learners identified by teachers who need extra reading assistance to help build strong foundations for life-long reading.
