#Recipe: Boost your winter immune system with The Salvation Army's special chicken soup

Try this chicken soup recipe and keep the winter snotties at bay.

For centuries, chicken soup has been the go-to meal for anyone battling winter bugs such as colds and flu.

Studies have since proven that nutrient-rich broth provides hydration and electrolytes, while chicken provides protein and amino acids, such as cysteine, to reduce congestion.

Protein contained in chicken soup further supports immune function, while vegetables add antioxidants and vitamins.

Sipping a bowl of old-fashioned chicken soup can relieve cold and flu symptoms, while fluids thin mucus and help prevent dehydration.

As a provider of hearty meals to those in need, the Salvation Army Benoni Goodwill Centre shared its delectable old-fashioned rich chicken soup recipe.

Ingredients:
• Chopped carrots
• Sliced onions
• Celery
• Green beans
• Peas
• Potatoes or sweet potatoes
• Diced tomatoes
• Add beans which have been soaked overnight (optional before – choice
• Chicken broth, which consists of a chicken carcass or pieces, aromatic vegetables such as onions, carrots, celery, garlic and herbs, simmered in water for between an hour and four hours.
Drain the fluid and add it to soups to boost flavour, depth, and, most importantly, a vitamin-packed base for soups and stews.

Method:
• Simmer the vegetables along with the broth in a large pot for up to five hours, stirring occasionally.
• Once cooked, blitz the vegetables with a handheld blender and serve.

With temperatures steadily dropping, the Salvation Army Benoni Goodwill Centre will be providing care and comfort to the city’s needy.

To ensure that its residents, as well as those who call the streets home, are warm and fed, the centre relies on community support.

Donations of non-perishable food, blankets and warm clothing are always welcome.
