HOSPICE WEEK: Love, care and support, the foundations of palliative care
East Rand Palliative Care (ERPC) offers support during life’s darkest moments.
Twenty-four months of care, support and compassion offered by East Rand Palliative Care (ERPC), ensured that Hennie and Adri Steenberg could continue flourishing as they celebrated four decades of unconditional love.
Their journey of uncertainty began in 2011, when Hennie was diagnosed with skin cancer.
Through medical care, routine check-ups and preventative measures, the cancer was effectively managed and the couple lived their lives watching their brood grow and expand.
The Kempton Park couple’s lives came tumbling down in 2020 when a flare-up on Hennie’s lip came with devastating news: the cancer had spread into his chin. Extensive surgery, reconstruction, bone and skin grafts as well as radiation and chemotherapy became routine.
Despite aggressive treatment, the final diagnosis was unthinkable. The cancer had become terminal with a life expectancy of six months to a year.
Overwhelmed, heartbroken and uncertain, Adri enlisted the help of ERPC expecting nothing more than hospice care to assist her beloved husband. However, the holistic palliative care model not only ensured Hennie’s continued care but became a constant source of support for Adri.
“I no longer felt alone,” she said.
“Palliative care carried us through one of the most difficult chapters of our lives.
“When the team of ERPC arrived at our home, I expected a clinical approach but the care was deeply human.”
Care began immediately. Hennie’s pain was managed, symptoms were controlled, medication was arranged and delivered and emotional support became part of their daily reality. Most importantly, a helping hand and patient ear was always near.
“As his strength declined, I was never left to manage alone. The team supported us both, quietly carrying the weight alongside us,” said Adri in a testament to the value of palliative care.
“Hennie was able to live two additional years, a gift that was made possible through the right care and support of the ERPC team.
“Even in the smallest moments, the support mattered, not just through medical support, but practical help, emotional reassurance and a presence I could rely on.”
In celebration of Hospice Week (May 4 to 10), ERPC also marks 40 years of serving the community quietly, consistently and compassionately.
Reiterating their message that palliative care is not reserved for end of life care, it is a journey of dignified living through comfort and support from the moment of diagnosis.
