Benoni Northerns’ first league defeat of the season will sting, not just because they lost, but because it was largely self-inflicted.

In a highly anticipated top-of-the-table Eastern Super League clash at the Manny Ferreirinho Field on May 16, Northerns pushed log leaders Luso Africa all the way, but ill-discipline and missed chances ultimately handed the visitors a 2-0 victory.

On another day, the result could have been very different.

Luso arrived in Northmead expected to cruise, but were quickly forced to dig deep. They started brightly, forcing goalkeeper Andisa Hola into a sharp early save after a defensive lapse gifted striker Dalubuhle Buyisa space inside the box.

Despite dominating possession in the opening stages, Luso failed to capitalise and Northerns grew into the contest.

Calvin Ntsieng sparked the hosts’ first real attack after being played through by Sifundo Sibanyoni, beating his marker before being hauled down just outside the area. The resulting free-kick came to nothing, but it signalled a shift in momentum.

Moments later, defender Kgotso Mohare intercepted play at halfway, drove forward and slipped Ntsieng through again. His effort was well saved, earning Northerns a corner as the home side began to apply pressure.

But just as they found their rhythm, Northerns unravelled.

Frustration crept in, and players turned on each other with visible bickering and shouting, allowing Luso back into the match. The visitors nearly punished them before the break, hitting both the crossbar and the post through Simphiwe Mngomezulu as the teams went into halftime goalless.

Northerns emerged after the interval with renewed intent and urgency.

They created chances early in the second half, but poor finishing let them down. Ludick Malele missed a golden opportunity after beating the offside trap, while Sibanyoni, a constant threat, was denied a penalty after being shoved from behind. He later squandered another close-range chance.

Luso sensed the desperation and slowed the tempo, regaining control.

Coach Andrew Kelly’s substitutions proved decisive, with super-sub Uche Dike breaking the deadlock with a clinical half-volley.

Northerns tried to respond, coming close from a free-kick on the edge of the area, but Luso remained composed.

The game slipped further from the hosts’ grasp when Mohare was shown a red card for pulling down Buyisa just outside the box. Although the resulting free-kick came to nothing, Northerns were left exposed.

Dike struck again late on to seal the win, capitalising on defensive lapses to secure all three points and extend Luso’s unbeaten run.

The victory sees Luso move to 27 points, opening a seven-point lead at the top of the table.

For Northerns, it was a harsh lesson. Their quality is undeniable, but until they match it with composure and discipline, results like this will continue to haunt them.

Earlier in the day, Luso also claimed a 3-0 win in the reserves fixture.
