#Comrades2026: Mikolongwe ready for his Comrades bow

He has logged over 2 000km in his preparation for the ultimate human race.

Bright Mikolongwe’s goal is simple when he lines up for his Comrades Marathon debut in the up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday (June 14).

It is to learn, enjoy the experience and test himself against the best in the world’s greatest ultramarathon.

Mikolongwe, who recently returned to Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) after a two-year stint with Nick Bester’s Nedbank Running Club, is among Northerns’ 33 novices tackling this year’s ultimate human race.

Bright Mikolongwe will make his Comrades debut on Sunday.

While he understands the magnitude of the challenge ahead, the Malawian believes the time is finally right to make his long-awaited Comrades debut after years of patiently preparing for the iconic race.

“This is my first Comrades. I’ve been learning for the past nine years.

“Because the distance is so long, I had to think carefully before running it.

“Most people often asked when I was going to run Comrades. I wasn’t ready. I’ve always told them that when I feel ready, I will do it. So this year, I’m ready for it,” said Mikolongwe.

He heads into the race in excellent form after successfully defending his Benoni Northerns Marathon Ultra Challenge title in April, winning the 48km race in 2:55:18.

His preparation has also been built on a massive training block, with more than 2 300km logged since January.

“Every year, I make sure I improve and take some minutes off my previous times. That’s why I feel ready this year because I’ve trained hard. Since January, I have covered almost 2 300km. I have never trained like this before.

“Compared to last year, I ran more marathons and ultras. According to my training records, I’ve averaged close to 60km every day.

“Because of that, my coach told me to go and try it. He said I shouldn’t put pressure on myself because it’s my first Comrades. I’m going there to learn,” he said.

With the 85.77km distance presenting an entirely new challenge, the 2:19:31 marathoner plans to race conservatively. While a finish under six hours remains his primary target, he would gladly settle for a silver medal on debut.

“My target, based on how I’m feeling, is to run under six hours. I don’t know how the race will play out, but that’s what I’m aiming for. If not, I will be happy with a silver medal.”

Bright Mikolongwe runs on the finishing straight before winning the men’s ultra-race.

The athlete said he is delighted to be back at the club where his running journey flourished and believes it is fitting that he makes his Comrades debut in BNAC colours.

“I went to Nedbank to learn and gain experience. Now I’m back home and I would like to repay BNAC for all they have done for me.”
