WATCH: Regionals a celebration of Benoni’s piping history

The band claimed three regional wins.

Drums rolled in thunderous unison and chanters bellowed as pipe bands gathered to participate in the Pipe Band Association of South Africa (PBASA) regional final, hosted by Benoni High School (BHS) on July 11.

Despite hearty competition among the bands in the lead-up to the national championships, which will take place at St Benedict’s School on July 25, the day’s festivities also celebrated the Benoni High Pipe Band’s 50th anniversary.

Donning their customary black and red tartans, the band performed with precision and gusto, marking the momentous occasion.

Watching from above, the driving force behind the band’s success, Hilary Webber’s fingers drummed to the rhythm of the music, her actions encapsulating five decades of rich heritage, of which her family has been central to its development.

“Oh, how my father and the band’s founder, P/M TS Tommy McLeod, would have loved to have seen this,” she said.

“The band’s history and ongoing success are deeply entrenched in our family’s legacy. The two exist in mutual harmony. I am deeply privileged to be able to witness this glorious celebration.”

Polishing drum majors Callan Stephen and Reabetswe Teale’s shoes ahead of their display before the adjudicators, master in charge and BHS educator Malcolm Engles’ anxious anticipation was palpable.

“Over the years, it has become a bit of a ritual that I polish the drum majors’ shoes, almost like a good luck charm, although I think I am actually the jinx,” he said with a laugh.

“The members give so much of themselves every time they wrap their kilts around their waists. I suppose a bit of spit and shine is the least I can do as a sign of appreciation for their dedication.”

As the sun cast long shadows across the school’s main pavilion, those in attendance took their seats, clutching tissues as the bands gathered in formation for the stirring massed bands performance.

Slightly breaking from tradition, the entire Benoni High Pipe Band ensemble took centre stage to lead the playing of Amazing Grace and Flower of Scotland as part of the band’s historic celebration.

Former pipe band members were also invited to join.

“I cannot believe there are so many former members here,” whispered Webber, tears pooling in her eyes.

“This is magnificent, just amazing.”

Speaking at the event, BHS deputy head Alison Knoop said it was an honour to host the gathering and to watch BHS pupils, past and present, perform with such pride.

“As we celebrate 50 years of existence, we remain true not only to our school’s history but also celebrate each and every person for their time and effort in the continuous development of our band.

“Despite early mockery, this band has proven to be filled with talented young people who have driven its success.”

Roars of applause brought the day’s proceedings to an end, with the Benoni High Pipe Band claiming top honours as the regional Novice Juvenile winners, followed by Benoni MacTalla being crowned the Grade 2 champions.

The band’s Reabetswe Teale once again dazzled, being named the juvenile drum major champion.
