Voter registration for the November 4 local government elections closes at midnight on Friday (August 7), and Benoni residents are urged to ensure they are registered at the correct voting stations.

Ward 27 Clr Lornette Joseph urges residents to check their voting eligibility and confirm their voting stations, following extensive ward boundary and voting station changes.

“Many voters who have been voting at the same venue for years may now find that their ward, voting station, or both have changed,” she said.

“One of the most significant changes affects Airfield, which, following the announcement of the election results, will move from Ward 27 to Ward 28.

“During the demarcation process, the Independent Electoral Commission incorrectly moved many residents to the Ekurhuleni East College Campus voters roll. These residents should, however, cast their votes at Northfield Methodist Church.

“Anyone living in Airfield is strongly encouraged to check their registration without delay.”

Residents of Ward 28 should note that Wordsworth High School now serves as a voting station, instead of the Benoni Baptist Church.

In addition, Ward 27 has expanded to include parts of Ward 23 and Ward 24, including sections of Northmead as well as the Music Academy of Gauteng in Van Ryn Small Holdings voting area.

“Northmead is now split between Ekurhuleni East College Campus and John Barrable Hall,” explained Joseph.

“While the IEC has moved many residents in the Avenues to Ekurhuleni East College Campus, residents have not been adequately notified of the change.”

She further highlighted the changes around Our Lady of Fatima Portuguese Catholic Church in Brentwood Park.

“This voting station has also seen a lot of changes, with it being split between three wards.

“Depending on where voters live, some residents will now vote at John Barrable Hall, while others will vote at Sunstar Complex, Jatniel.”

Joseph pointed out that while hosting various voter registration assistance opportunities throughout the northern suburbs, it was found that residents have been allocated to the incorrect voting station or that their registration details do not reflect the recent boundary changes.

“Checking your details gives you time to correct any errors before registrations close,” said Joseph.

“If you arrive at the wrong voting station on election day and your name does not appear on that station’s voters’ roll, you will be directed to the correct voting station before being able to cast your vote. Taking a few minutes to confirm your details now can save considerable time and frustration on the day.”

Councillors across Benoni will continue hosting assistance tables throughout the week to help residents check and, where necessary, update their registration details before the looming deadline.

Alternatively, visit elections.org.za and follow these steps:

• Select “I want to see where my voting station is”.
• Enter your residential address to confirm which voting station you should be voting at.
• Once you have confirmed your correct voting station, select “Check Voter Registration Status” to ensure your registration matches the voting station.
• If your details are incorrect, update your registration before midnight on August 7.

“Ensuring that your registration is correct now will make voting quicker, easier and stress-free,” Joseph said.
