The criminal abuse case against a man suspected of abusing dogs at an abandoned property on the corner of Third and North roads, Cloverdene, has stalled.

On July 22, the Benoni City Times reported that residents living near the property have expressed shock and concern following allegations that the man, who is believed to be mentally unwell, has been abusing and killing dogs at the premises.

Annie Jungmann of The Animal Guardians (TAG) confirmed that the organisation opened a case of animal cruelty and bestiality at the Crystal Park Police Station on July 13 in connection with incidents allegedly taking place at the property.

A one-year-old dog, now named Nia, was rescued from the property and is in the care of TAG.
At the property, Jungmann and her team also found two dog carcasses wrapped in bedding.

“Police were provided with photographs and veterinary reports that may serve as key evidence in the investigation,” said Jungmann

“We are, however, unable to disclose further details out of fear of jeopardising the investigation.”

On August 5, Jungmann confirmed that she received an SMS from the Crystal Park SAPS, informing her that the docket has been referred to the office of the senior state prosecutor at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

However, no further information is available regarding the progression of the investigation.

Jungmann explained TAG first responded to reports of animal cruelty at the property in early January.

The suspect was arrested and taken to a local hospital for assessment. He was reportedly found to be mentally unstable and the initial case was withdrawn.

“The suspect is known to us, and we have in the past confiscated dogs from his possession amidst allegations that he may be involved in the theft of animals,” said the vocal animal welfare activist.

“Other than our concern for the well-being of animals, we fear that things may escalate and put the safety and lives of others in danger.”

No arrests have been made.
