Whitehead concludes cross country league season with superb performance

He finished eighth in 23:44 for his second top 10 finish of the season.

Jonathan Whitehead showed remarkable resilience, battling through exhaustion to complete his race at the final CGA cross country league meeting in Tsakane on August 1.

Whitehead did not hide his feelings about the demanding course around Tsakane Softball Stadium and the Faranani Multipurpose Centre after crossing the finish line in the U16 boys’ 6km race.

“Today was not a good day,” he said. “This course was difficult. But it’s not how you start that’s important, it’s how you finish.”

Diepsloot AC’s Tsepang Ntlatla and Kempies’ Michael Bekker set a blistering early pace, but the challenging route quickly began to take its toll. The opening lap drained the athletes’ energy, and it soon became apparent that survival would be just as important as speed over the three-lap course.

Whitehead, however, stuck to the race plan that had served him well throughout the season. While the front runners attacked from the gun, he settled in behind Benoni Harriers teammate Ockert Winter, with twin brother Alexander close behind, as the trio negotiated the long stretch behind the Faranani Multipurpose Centre.

As the race wore on, Whitehead, who clocked 23:05 in league five at Kwa-Thema Stadium, relied on grit and discipline to carry him through the demanding closing stages. His patience and race intelligence paid off as he crossed the line in 23:44, his third-fastest 6km time of the season, to finish eighth and secure his second top-10 placing of the campaign.

The talented middle-distance athlete has made significant strides this year and will be encouraged by his season’s best of 22:59, clocked in league five in Daveyton, over the distance as he continues his development under the guidance of Richard O’Donoghue at the Hoërskool Hans Moore training grounds.

Elsewhere, Emma Hickley and Kiana Pepler flew the Benoni Harriers flag with victories in their respective races. Hickley claimed the U16 girls’ 4km title in 16:09, while Pepler won the combined youth, junior and senior women’s 2km race in 08:44.

Gareth Jonas finished seventh in the U15 boys’ 4km race in 15:56, while Winter (23:16), Alexander (25:57) and Liam Hendrikse (26:38) placed sixth, 12th and 15th respectively in the U16 boys’ 6km event.

Ricardo Origa completed the men’s veterans (40-44) 8km race in 36:58, while Roger Hickley placed eighth in the men’s masters (50-54) event, covering four laps of the 2km course in 37:17.

The athletes now turn their attention to the CGA Cross Country Championships at Germiston Soccer Club on August 15.
