New road sign adds to confusion and congestion outside Wordsworth High
“This is about more than the times it is about the CoE’s lack in conducting proper investigations before implementing changes.”
From 14:30 on school days, the laughter and conversation of Wordsworth High learners exiting the property is overshadowed by frustrated hoots, caused by what motorists call a redundant temporary one-way signboard.
The sign, located on the corner of Main Street and Wordsworth Road, Farrarmere, like many other metro signs, was recently replaced as part of the City of Ekurhuleni’s (CoE) by-law enforcement efforts.
“As with the signboard that was erected at the Homestead Dam, stating that fishing is no longer permitted, due diligence was not done before replacing the sign outside the school,” said Ward 28 councillor Mary Goby.
“The sign stipulates that from 07:00 to 08:00 and 13:00 to 14:30 the road becomes a temporary one-way from the direction of Cloudy Street towards Main Road.
“The problem is the school is dismissed at 14:30 Monday to Thursday, thus when the road experiences the most congestion the temporary one-way is no longer in affect, leading to frustration and dangerous road conditions for pedestrians and other road users.”
Goby added the issue extends beyond the school, with residents expressing their dismay too.
“This sign is causing chaos instead of reaching its intended goal – to ease congestion, create a safer space for learners to exit the school grounds and allow law enforcement to address traffic infringements.
“Enquiries about it have not provided any concrete answers or plans to address the matter.”
CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini told Benoni City Times Clr Goby has been informed that the onus rests with the school to engage with residents of Wordsworth Road and other road users to garner consent for the times on the signboard to be changed.
“It is frustrating this matter is not being addressed. I will, however, continue in my efforts to the benefit of the school, motorists and the wider Farrarmere community,” said Goby.
