Northmead bakery puts the icing on 60 years of 'from scratch' magic
Quality baked goods have cemented the bakery in the hearts of Benonians.
Before most Benonians have brewed their first cup of Java, plumes of flour fill Jurita Bakery, the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting down Sixth Avenue, Northmead.
For the past six decades, the bakery has been the star of many a school lunchbox, celebratory table and those spoil-yourself moments.
Jurita’s first loaves of crispy-fresh bread were pulled out of the ovens on April 1, 1966, but its commitment to serving the community with flavourful baked goods was no April Fool’s joke.
Founded by Empamindas Kongas and Angheliki Georgopoulos, the family-owned establishment prickled residents’ taste buds, its delicious delicacies anchoring it in the hearts and stomachs of its customers.
Part-owner Kosta Catsoulacos says that change is inevitable but, as one of the last surviving ‘from-scratch’ bakeries, Jurita remains deeply entrenched in tradition.
“Everything from our array of baked goods to our hot meals is made from scratch every day.
“Relying on recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, we do not cut corners or compromise on quality.
“We strive to produce flavourful goods that sate hunger, curb cravings and speak to the soul.”
Growing up in a home where pots were constantly set to boil and traditional pastries flowed from the oven like the tide of the Mediterranean, Kosta delved into the culinary world, experimenting with flavours and dabbling in serving up dishes that appeal to the eye.
“Food is a universal language that speaks to more than just the instinct to feed our bodies and sustain our energy levels. It speaks to the senses and forms the cornerstone of many human interactions,” he said.
“A dish that speaks through flavours and texture holds the key to unlocking precious memories while rooting itself in the present.”
With an edge of pride, Kosta points to two of the bakery’s signature items, cappuccino cake and mille-feuille, saying that, through trial and error, the bakery’s founders, Empamindas and Angheliki, polished the recipes to create pure decadence crowned with whole fresh cream.
“Consistency is the key to success, and that is what we serve on every plate,” he said.
Despite the challenges of running a small business, Kosta says he hopes that Jurita Bakery will continue to be a favourite in the hearts of Benonians.
“I hope generations to come will be able to enjoy passionately prepared quality delicacies served from our hearts to their homes.”
