Pharmacy remains the pulse of Northmead 35 years on
Quality healthcare is at the heart of the Mavrikis family.
From seasonal sniffles to ongoing healthcare, Medilkin Pharmacy on Second Street, Northmead, has kept its finger on the pulse of community care for 35 years.
Qualified chemists Anthony and Sharon Mavrikis stepped in in 1991, buying the established pharmacy and tapping into the surrounding healthcare network.
Then open daily until 23:00, the outlet became an extension of the family home, with Anthony and Sharon’s three sons napping behind the counter or dutifully assisting behind the till.
“The pharmacy has always been more than just a family business. Over more than three decades, our clients have become cherished friends,” said Sharon.
“We have witnessed families expand and watched generations of Benonians grow into valued members of our community. It has been a blessing.”
Testing the waters of semi-retirement, Anthony says that he does not foresee fully stepping away from what he and Sharon have built, but that it is a privilege to welcome their son, Alexi, as the administrative manager.
“Many memories were made here,” he said.
“The store shelves often doubled as imaginary mountain tops for the boys. This is where they grew, developed and played. Having Alexi step in and be the bridge of continuation for what Sharon and I have built while remaining deeply committed to serving the community is wonderful.”
Now boasting a full-service clinic, Mediklin is expanding its services under the guidance of professional nurses.
Services include general, baby, and women’s clinics, wound care, and preventive healthcare screenings.
“Access to quality and affordable healthcare is at the core of what we built,” said Sharon.
“Technological advancements have created a wedge between personal interactions. We may have convenience at our fingertips, but people are really more disconnected than ever.
“We aim to offer a space where clients can receive quality healthcare while rooting the local chemist within the family circle again.”
Deeply aware of his parents’ unwavering commitment to the Northmead community and surrounds, Alexi said his plans for the business’s future will depend heavily on the legacy they have selflessly built.
“My vision is to extend Mediklin’s reach beyond the pharmacy’s doors. It is my dream to establish a fully fledged medical network around us, offering a variety of medical services on residents’ doorstep.”
As a new father, he continued, saying he now fully appreciates the long hours and sacrifices Sharon and Anthony made.
“The thought of having a sick child and not being able to get them the care or medicine they need is daunting,” he said.
“For years my parents worked late into the night. I realise now how reassuring extended pharmacy operating hours are.
“Your health and that of your loved ones doesn’t keep office hours.”
