Humanity in every cup!

Refining a unique blend of South American and African beans roasted locally

With the onset of winter and the noticeably chillier starts to the day, your morning coffee will be moving from optional to mandatory with the second and third cups flowing a lot sooner than normal. Coffee being more than just a warming up mechanism but additionally your good morning internal kick start and the fire starter fluid for function – have you ever considered where your coffee comes from and what’s the back story?

I recently got the chance to sit down and chat with Nicholas Phelps the driving force behind the brand ‘Human Bean’ – they are the coffee supplier to the very popular Yummy Bean Café at the World of Wellness Centre in Rynfield (opposite the Bunny Park)

Nicholas is a young, vibrant live wire and the Human Bean story is an interesting one, with plans initially focused on a retail hub with mobile units to serve at markets, festivals and events – then along came Covid and like most businesses at the time, the best laid plans were flipped on their head, this however proved to be a blessing. With their business and social network the demand for home delivery of ground beans took off and redirected the brands trajectory into supplying resdential, corporate and then hospitality.

Over the years Nicholas has refined the product with a mixture of South American and African beans, all roasted and packaged locally. The offering doesn’t end there – Human Bean follows through the process to deliver the cup to your table with comprehensive barista training and support to machine calibration and servicing – all important factors in making a good cup of coffee.

Nicholas, like the brand is incredibly humble yet hard working and is reluctant to seek exposure for the charitable work that they are part of in many spheres, but it does emphasise the brand slogan ‘Humanity in every cup!’ which he stresses makes the relationship with Yummy Bean such a good one as he points out the work that the Yummy Bean team do in our community with many charitable initiatives supported by them.

I loved this chat and the two intensely flavoured Flat Whites that accompanied the conversation. We look forward to seeing where the journey takes them and of course to the next cup of coffee.
