Need your financial questions answered?
Bitcoin is exciting. Nvidia is exciting. But they won’t do what a retirement annuity does.

Open social media today, and you’ll see endless videos promoting Bitcoin, AI shares, Forex trading and the next “must-buy” investment.
Retirement annuities, on the other hand, are often dismissed as boring.
I understand why.
Watching someone claim they’ve doubled their money overnight is exciting. Nobody posts a viral video about contributing R2,000 a month to a retirement annuity.
But here’s the reality: they serve completely different purposes.
Balancing Risk and Long-Term Security
There is absolutely nothing wrong with investing in shares or even cryptocurrency if you understand the risks. In fact, many successful investors own both. But the question every young investor should ask is this:
“Who is looking after the 70-year-old version of me?”
A retirement annuity isn’t just another investment. It’s one of the few financial products designed specifically to build long-term wealth while offering valuable tax advantages. Contributions may qualify for tax deductions, investments grow without annual Capital Gains Tax, Dividend Withholding Tax or tax on interest inside the fund, and retirement savings enjoy significant legal protection from creditors in many circumstances.
The Power of Financial Discipline
Perhaps its greatest strength is something far less exciting—it protects you from yourself. You can’t cash it in every time life throws a temptation your way, allowing decades of disciplined investing and compound growth to do their work.
My advice to younger investors is simple: don’t choose between a retirement annuity and investing in shares. Do both.
Use your retirement annuity as the foundation of your financial future, then build wealth around it with quality investments that match your goals and risk tolerance.
