It was a productive day for Daveyton women when they gathered at Marivate Community Hall on Women’s Day (August 9) to celebrate.
The event, titled Dream Chasers, was organised by Nosipho Sidinana and served as encouragement to young local women to follow their dreams and venture into business.
“Most young women in the community have good business ideas, but due to their circumstances, like poverty, they can’t put their ideas into reality.
“This initiative aims to make people aware that everything is possible in life no matter the situation.
“Crime, substance abuse and other social ills are factors that inhibit the community to thrive. With this platform I am providing those in need with space to showcase what they can offer,” said Sidinana.
Sidinana defined a woman as a powerful rock that doesn’t erode easily.
“A woman is a powerful human being that is not shaken by smaller circumstances. Females must have dignity and respect because people will judge you according to the way you present yourself to them.
“Helping each other as women doesn’t mean financial support but you can help someone with the little you have,” said Sidinana.
Business owners such Thando Mabuza of Imali Yami Corporative, Lindiwe Mabena and Phumzile Mnisi-Phatedi were some of the invited guest speakers.
Mabena, who’s a professional nurse at Modder East, advised women to always believe in their dreams.
“No one believed in me when I said I wanted to open my own clinic but look where I am now.
“Let’s help each other grow in business because we are not like the older generation of women who used to be housewives,” said Mabena.
Another guest speaker Phumzile Mnisi-Phatedi of Great Empire of Kemet in Soweto said women should know about their traditions.
Forgotten Nation event
Forgotten Nation, an organisation which represents unemployed people over 35 years against ageism, also held their event at Marivate Park.
The organisation launched the Daveyton branch that will advocate for the needs and aspirations of the unemployed.
According to the national coordinator, Mmatlou Tsipa, unemployed people from Daveyton suffer from severe stress and depression.
“Young parents are supposed to be the backbone of the nation but due to unemployment, they cannot achieve that.
“Women must stand together to fight unemployment by opening businesses and supporting each other,” said Tsipa.
