Godfrey Ntuli (Tembisa): “I was still in school and using the trains. It was always crowded and some passengers acted recklessly, hanging out the doors. But if given the choice I will happily commute by train again. It was safer and cheaper.”
Pieter Coetzee (Brakpan): “I used to travel to and from school by train. We would use our sling-shots to shoot pebbles at passing trains. Hearing the stone hitting the carts would be cause for high-pitched cheers.”
Aaron Rapopo (Daveyton): “I miss traveling by train. Back in the 80s a week pass would cost only R10. The commute was safe and reliable and gave you time to relax before starting your workday.”
Joan Rankin (Benoni): “We used to travel to Johannesburg quite often. I remember attending a Neil Diamond concert one evening, on the way home the entire train erupted with passengers singing his songs.”
Graham Hattingh (East London): “As a former police officer, I used to travel home from the police college in Pretoria. It was easy to make the long commute home while sharing a joke or meal with fellow passengers.”
