Miss Benoni calls for more extra-curricular activities in schools
“I personally think an event like this can help the youth stay away from distractions like drugs and alcohol."
Reigning Miss Benoni, Ntokozo Mahlangu organised the Mr and Miss Siphumelele Primary School beauty pageant on September 2 to bring back the excitement of pageantry to schools.
The 22-year-old told the City Times one of her motivations is to see learners engaged in extra-curricular activities to stay away from social ills like drug and alcohol abuse.
“I think an event like this can keep the youth away from distractions like drugs and alcohol. We should have more extra-curricular activities in schools to keep learners engaged.

“I felt that learners also needed a break from school work, so I organised this event to make learning fun. This will help learners discover their hidden talents,” she said.
One of Ntokozo’s passions is education. She urged the Benoni youth to focus on their studies as education will create better opportunities for them.
“Education shows us the importance of hard work. It also helps us to grow and develop. It enables us to live in a better society where we respect our human rights, laws and regulations.
“Through education, we can become better citizens who can differentiate between bad and good.”

The final year bachelor of education UNISA student stated that she wants to use her profession to make a difference in Benoni.

“I love giving back and seeing others do well. That’s the source of my strength. I want to be the change I want to see and want to bring hope where there’s despair,” she said.
Since her reign started, she said she was amazed by the generosity and love she received from Benonians from all walks of life.
“Benoni has talented and intelligent individuals who can bring change and make the town better. Benoni has many opportunities. It’s up to us to grab these opportunities to better our lives. We have to team up to influence others to see the hope that a lot of us can see.”

Nkosingiphile Nene and Sthembile Ntombela walked away with the Mr and Miss Siphumelele Primary School crowns.
Sfiso Masango and Peletso Matjila claimed the first and second prince titles while Basetsana Msibi and Kwandokuhle Mbonxa were crowned the first and second princesses, respectively.
