Storm brings down trees

Community organisations and private companies jumped in to help

During heavy thunderstorms which hit Benoni on January 6, a large tree fell on top of a vehicle which was parked on the side of the road on Cnr Woburn Avenue and Bunyan Street.

According to William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, members of the Benoni Central emergency services responded to a call around 19:08 about a tree that fell on top of a parked light motor vehicle.

“No one was found inside the car. No casualties were reported,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi said again in the morning on January 7, another tree was removed off the road after it collapsed on Cnr Turvey Street and Howard Avenue after being struck by a motorist while reversing.

Various organisations including Benoni CPF, Afriforum Benoni, NoJack, Wolf Protection Services, NSRI volunteers, EMPD, Ekurhuleni council, also jumped in to lend a helping hand with disaster management and cleaning up the affected areas.

Meanwhile, residents of Benoni have taken to social media to share pictures of trees and branches which fell on various streets in Benoni as a result of the bad weather on January 6.
