The 2023 academic year officially kicked off on January 11, with thousands of learners across the country returning to classrooms.
For many children in Benoni, the day marked their first day in ‘big school’ as they embarked on another chapter in their lives as they started Grade One.
The City Times visited several schools to capture the moment, as teachers from the different schools welcomed the little ones to school.
Benoni Junior School
With no learner spotted crying, learners showed excitement and nervousness on their first day of school.
According to the principal Pranisha Mansingh, the school welcomed 200 Grade Ones for the 2023 academic year.
Mansingh said they referred parents who enquired about placements on the first day of school to the Gauteng Department of Education and also took their contact details.
Benoni Junior School welcomed twins, Peter and Malabele Langa on the first day of school on January 11.
Laerskool Northmead
All the Grade Ones at the school seemed to be happy to be at school as they explored their new environment on their first day.
The principal, Johan Pieters said they welcomed 115 Grade One learners this year. “The first day of school went smoothly and we are looking forward to a great year,” said Pieters.
Grade One learners Christiaan Botha, Ruzenka van der Westhuisen and Liané Smith enrolled at Laerskool Northmead.
St Dunstan’s Preparatory School
Learners were visibly excited for the first day at ‘big school’ as the school welcomed their intake of 71 Grade One learners.
The principal, Craig McIlrath said they were delighted with the intake this year. “I’m looking forward to watching them grow and develop and to nurturing the potential of every individual.”

Emaromeni Primary School
All kitted in their new school uniforms and ready for the academic year were Grade One learners from Emaromeni Primary School in Actonville. The school admitted only 22 learners.
Emaromeni Primary School has a single Grade One class with 22 learners.
Pioneer Primary School
The school welcomed a total of 185 learners who were eager to begin their school journey. Added to this, the school was lucky to be gifted with six sets of twins.
The school’s foundation phase HOD, Ms S Moolla said all teachers were ready for the year ahead and cannot wait to work with the new learners.
Meanwhile, parents have also submitted pictures of their children’s first day of school.
