Family remembers beloved grandfather

The father of six died in his sleep days before his milestone birthday.

A Daveyton family is mourning the loss of their beloved grandfather, Obed Phala, who died last month, a few days before his 100th birthday.

The family wanted to have him featured in the City Times in celebration of his 100th birthday, but unfortunately, their plans were cut short when they discovered one morning that he had died peacefully in his sleep.

According to granddaughter Mmakgotso Hlase, they were looking forward to their granddad turning 100, but death robbed them of that opportunity.

Obed Phala worked as a messenger at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, Delfos Atlas Copco, Rand Rivert and Macsteel.

“We saw he was ageing, but we were hopeful we would spend more years with him. He was our go-to person whenever we needed advice. He had so much love for his children and grandchildren.

“He was the pillar of the family and passionate about education. He was a walking encyclopedia and loved dressing up. We will miss him,” said Hlase.

Born in 1923, the father of six worked for 40 years as a messenger at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, Delfos Atlas Copco, Rand Rivert and Macsteel until he retired.
