#ChildProtectionWeek: Community members urged to protect children

Crystal Park SAPS joined forces with various organisations to promote the rights of children.

To mark National Child Protection Week, Crystal Park SAPS in collaboration with various government departments and civil society organisations rendering child protection services, took to the streets on May 31 to encourage members of the community to care and protect children.

Child Protection Week is commemorated annually from May 31 to June 7 to raise awareness of the rights of children.

Holding placards with messages such as ‘The bruises will go away but the pain will remain’, representatives from the CPF, LoveLife, EMPD, SANCA, Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Life Choices, Crime Prevention Wardens and Ward 110 Clr Sarah Mnisi took part in the march.

Crystal Park SAPS officers, crime prevention wardens and members from government departments and civil society organisations marched through the streets of Chief Albert Luthuli in Daveyton on May 31 to highlight the scourge of violence against children.

They walked from Chief Albert Luthuli Clinic to Cloverdene Shopping Centre.

According to Crystal Parks SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Lerato Mopeli, they also urged community members to protect children from abuse, violence and exploitation, not only this week but every day.

Crime prevention warden Captain Khensani Makhubela said, “I think awareness marches like these are important to enlighten parents that children who experience abuse or neglect can develop psychological trauma. This can affect the way they view life in the future.”

Informative pamphlets relating to GBV, drugs and SAPS crime safety tips were handed out to residents during the march.
