SAPS target illegal mining hotspots

Police also recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A group of illegal miners were arrested on June 15 during a multi-disciplinary operation targeting illegal mining hotspots in New Modder and Golden Drive.

The operation was led by the provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and the deputy provincial commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Newhuhulwi, police recovered explosives, dangerous weapons, illegal mining equipments and liquor during the raid.

Police also recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, in the possession of one of the suspects.
