LETTER: Essex Avenue has been ignored for three years

Send your Letter to the Editor to benonicitytimes@caxton.co.za

Alex Marcon, Benoni, writes:

As per emails sent to the respective Ekurhuleni representatives and the mayoral spokesperson regarding the resurfacing and maintenance of the main entrance to Essex Avenue, Benoni Central, the road has remained in an unsafe and unmaintained condition for over three years.

Despite repeated requests, the respective Ekurhuleni service teams have taken no action, showing what appears to be a point-blank disregard for residents’ concerns.

Hence, I am requesting that this lack of care towards community members in this area be exposed and made public, as we have been asking for action on the entrance to Essex Avenue for the past three years.

The families who live on this avenue have had to endure this neglected and unsafe access road for years. This is not what South Africans stand for at all.

I kindly request that this matter be escalated through a news piece in the Benoni City Times to expose Ekurhuleni’s failure to take action on this situation.

Editor’s note: City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini responded to the City Times: “The city is in the process of reinstating the corner of Surrey and Essex roads. The resurfacing of the entire Surrey and Essex roads will be prioritised in the new financial year, which started on July 1. In the meantime, patching and other forms of road maintenance will be carried out to make the road usable.
