The City of Ekurhuleni has shut down operations at the Weltevreden landfill site in Brakpan following escalating safety concerns linked to illegal mining activities, and violent clashes between illegal miners and waste reclaimers.

Metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, said the decision was taken to protect both employees and members of the public from potential harm.

This comes during a period (festive season) that typically sees an increase in household and tourism-related waste.

The landfill site will remain closed indefinitely while authorities work to stabilise the situation and ensure the area is safe for operations.

The city has reported the matter to law-enforcement agencies, which are expected to investigate and address the security risks.

Residents and service users are advised to make use of alternative facilities, including the Rietfontein landfill site in KwaThema, Rooikraal in Dawn Park, or the Platkop landfill site near Katlehong.

The city apologises for any inconvenience caused by the closure.
