Fireworks: Stick to the rules warns City of Ekurhuleni

Residents can report fireworks-related incidents to the City’s call-taking centre on 011 458 0911 or via 112 on a cellphone.

As fireworks light up the skies to welcome the New Year, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has called on residents to celebrate responsibly, warning that the irresponsible use of fireworks can lead to animal distress, injuries, and property damage.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson Eric Maloka said that while fireworks are a long-standing New Year tradition, they often cause unnecessary harm.

“Although fireworks are traditionally used to usher in the New Year, this period often sees increased cases of animal distress and injuries, largely as a result of fireworks being set off irresponsibly,” Maloka said.

Strict regulations on sales and use
The City has confirmed that it is taking a firm stance on both the sale and use of fireworks during the festive period. Residents and businesses are reminded that fireworks are only permitted under strict regulations.

Sales: Businesses intending to sell fireworks must obtain certification from the SAPS Explosives Unit, as well as approval from the CoE DEMS Fire Safety section.

Setting off fireworks: Fireworks may not be set off in public spaces, including parks, restaurants, and shopping malls.

Safety precautions: It is illegal to point fireworks at any person, animal, building, or vehicle. Extreme caution is urged at all times.

Fines and penalties: Businesses selling fireworks without certification face a R2 500 fine, while individuals setting off fireworks illegally face a R1 000 spot fine.

“As we celebrate the New Year, we want to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. We urge residents to be mindful of noise levels, particularly with regard to animal safety,” Maloka said.

He added that the City is working closely with SAPS, the EMPD, and DEMS to enforce compliance.

“Our 30 emergency stations across the City are on high alert and ready to respond to any eventualities, especially on New Year’s Eve and beyond,” he said.

Residents can report fireworks-related incidents to the City’s call-taking centre on 011 458 0911 or via 112 on a cellphone.
