Cheer squads and drummies make waves at district comp
“The season is off to a riveting start with teams battling it out for their spot at nationals.”
Winds raged across the main field at Belvedere School on May 9, whipping against sequenced uniforms and rebelling against the arc of spinning maces during the District D6 Majorette and Cheerleading Competition.
Under the Gauteng Majorette and Cheerleading Association (GMCA) banner, the Belvedere Bobcats hosted the event as the season gained momentum for the national competition, which will be held in Pretoria in June.
Eleven majorettes and 11 cheerleading squads braved the icy winds, exhibiting performances that left the audience in awe.
“Every year the competition becomes increasingly more stiff,” said head coach of the Belvedere Bobcats and Crystal Park’s Acudeo College’s Panthers and Kittens, Vivienne Botha.
“The weather was not ideal, especially for showcasing aerial manoeuvres; however, each squad put on electric performances, thus already setting the bar high for this season.”
Turning her attention to the squads under her tutelage, Botha said interest in cheerleading, as a sport, is growing.
“We have welcomed some young blood into our squads. They are keen, and we hope that through their dedication, our squad will continue to be successful,” she said.
The cancelation of the co-ed cheerleading category during the recent competition was a drawback for the Bobcats; safety concerns due to poor lighting necessitated the decision.
“We were disappointed, but the safety of each participant is of the utmost importance. We look forward to our co-ed squad being able to showcase their talent.”
St Dominic’s drum majorette squad also put on a stellar display, claiming first prizes in flag group, baton stage, mace, large drill leader, as well as sub-leaders and display.
They claimed second place in the squad, thus securing their win as the overall winners of the day.
Belvedere’s Bobcats took first place in high hip-hop team, second in performance cheer, second and third in hip-hop doubles, as well as fourth place in cheerleading high all-girl team level 3
“We are incredibly proud of all the squads’ performances. They showed tenacity and resilience in the face of challenges,” said Botha.
