Respect the elderly

"Seventy three'years old, with wonderful children who look after me,'' of Crystal Park, writes by email:

If there were not old people there would not be a human race.

They have given their years to build a country for you younger people, as you are doing to make a place for your children.

So why are they treated so disgustingly?

Some are dumped by their children in homes and left like the garbage bags on the sidewalk – never to be seen again.

Others are left at the mercy of an uncaring municipality or government organisations.

We pay rates and taxes, but lifts cannot be kept in working condition for the elderly, and buildings that are standing empty and would probably be left to fall apart, e.g. the National Tuberculosis Association Hospital, Kingsway, are being used by Zelda Maseko and her staff to protect the aged.

I have been there and the elderly are treated with respect and are given a feeling of love and belonging, but she has now been told they are to be evicted.

What are these souls going to do?

They have no family, they only have each other and now they are to be thrown out because of paper work being handled by employees of a government department.

What has happened to the world?

Antiques become more valuable, but do old people become trash?

Please, responsible departments named, take care of the elderly; they also paid all their taxes and deserve to be treated with respect.
