Ridiculous to incur extravagant costs by renaming roads

It is totally ridiculous to incur extravagant costs by renaming roads as this will only confuse tourists and will make current navigation systems worthless

Glynis Cox Millett-Clay writes:

I read in the Benoni City Times last week that it is proposed (by council) to change Tom Jones Street to Amina Cachalia.

Sir George Farrar, the father of Benoni, named most of the streets and avenues in our town after people and places he recalled from his own home town in Bedford in the UK.

As there were two streets in Benoni called “Bedford” – one a street and one an avenue – it was decided to change Bedford Street to Tom Jones Street in 1919, after the councillor and then mayor, Tom Jones, who was a labour stalwart.

He was a representative of many men who worked to build Benoni and who, like him, are remembered and honoured in the street names of our town.

Tom Jones and his wife were very active in building our beloved Benoni and both, having a soft spot in their hearts for the soldiers, went as far as Johannesburg and Krugersdorp to meet the guys’ needs and interests.

During their mayoral year, the mayoress attended no fewer than 447 meetings and functions and said she was sorry she could not get around to doing more.

Before making any changes to our street names, let’s see to the fixing of potholes, cutting the grass on pavements instead of the grass growing onto the roads and keeping our parks clean.

Spend the money on service delivery, fixing up street lights and street names that have rusted or have been stolen off the poles.

Mark the streets properly for the “sleeping policemen” or humps in the road one cannot see.

They are wasting more money that could rather go into renovating the once beautiful buildings in Benoni.

Like Marian Hurly said: “Fix up the disgusting municipal buildings and toilet areas, which should be our pride and joy.”

Bottom line … What has Amina done for Benoni?
